Welcome to the Innovative Hurricane Products Association Website.

The IHPA will educate the public about the lack of commitment of the traditional bolt-on
shutter industry to consumer safety. Since 2004, almost a dozen homeowners have
died in fires when they were trapped behind bolted on plywood and hurricane shutters.
Click on Hurricane Shutter Tragedies and you can read about these deaths and the
ensuing property destruction. The bolt-on hurricane protection industry is made up of
bolt-on shutter manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, engineers, architects, testing
labs and building code officials who promote unsafe, hard to use and non-homeowner-
self-installed hurricane protection devices.
The IHPA will educate the media and public about plywood’s failure to pass both the
Large Missile Impact Test and the Florida Fire Prevention Code egress standards.
Despite not passing any Nationally Recognized Testing Standards, plywood, which is
the most common hurricane protection device sold in the U.S, has been given a blanket
“Code Exception” in the Florida Building Code as well as the International Residential
Code. If these testing standards are so important, there is no way that plywood would
be endorsed for hurricane protection. Yet, plywood IS readily endorsed by non-profits
like the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the Federal Alliance for Safe
Homes (FLASH), The International Hurricane Protection Association, Federal
Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and other groups. The IHPA believes
this is dangerous to consumers.

The Innovative Hurricane Products Association (IHPA) Recognizes Safe and Innovative Hurricane Protection Products
The goal of the Innovative Hurricane Products Association (IHPA) is to recognize safe &
innovative hurricane protection products. In these fragile economic times, there is a
tremendous need for hurricane protection products that:
- Can be easily removed from the inside in event of an emergency.
- Can be easily installed by one person with no power tools.
- Are translucent, allowing light in.
- Have been Large Missile Impact Tested.
- Have been proven to protect homes in Major Hurricanes.
- Cost an average $6 per square foot DIY
Through its Excellence in Safety Awards, the IHPA will be recognizing hurricane
protection product manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, engineers, architects &
government officials who promote safety and innovation in the use of hurricane
protection products.
